Sitemap.xml Validator

Validate your sitemap.xml — type, file size, URL count, lastmod tags, image entries, and sample URLs. Catches structural issues.

Sitemap.xml tells Google which URLs to crawl. A broken or oversized sitemap means Google misses pages. This tool fetches your sitemap, identifies whether it's a sitemap index or urlset, counts URLs and sitemaps, checks for lastmod and image:image entries, and shows the first 10 URLs as a sanity check.

How big can a sitemap be?

Google's hard limits: 50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed per sitemap file. Beyond either limit, split into multiple sitemaps and use a sitemap index. WordPress with Yoast/RankMath generates sitemap-index + per-type sitemaps automatically.

+
Should I include lastmod in my sitemap?

Yes. lastmod tells Google when the URL was last meaningfully updated. Google uses this to prioritise re-crawling. Stale or fake lastmod (e.g. updating to today's date for every URL on every regeneration) eventually causes Google to ignore your lastmod entirely.

+
Do I need separate sitemaps for images, video, news?

Specialised sitemaps (image:image, video:video, news:news) help signal that content type to Google. Best practice for B2B SaaS: regular sitemap with image:image tags on URLs that have key images. News sitemap is only for news publishers (frequent timely articles).

+
How often should I regenerate my sitemap?

Automatic on content change. WordPress regenerates on every post save. Static sites typically regenerate on every build. Manual periodic regeneration (weekly cron) is fine for low-frequency sites. Aim for sitemap to reflect site within 24h of changes.
