RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern replacement for legacy WHOIS — same data but returned as structured JSON. This tool queries the public RDAP service for any domain and shows registrar name, registration handle, status flags, key event dates, and nameservers. Useful for competitor research, brand monitoring, and expiration tracking.
WHOIS is the legacy protocol from the 1980s — returns plain text in non-standard formats. RDAP is the modern replacement (mandated by ICANN since 2018) — returns structured JSON with consistent fields. All gTLDs and many ccTLDs now support RDAP. Our tool uses RDAP because it's structured and free to query.
GDPR. Since 2018, most domain registrars redact personal contact information (registrant name, email, phone) from public WHOIS/RDAP for EU domains and increasingly globally. To get full registrant info you need a court order or law enforcement request through the registrar. This is by design.
For occasional manual checks, yes. For automated expiration alerts across many domains, use a dedicated service like Domain Watch or Domotz, or set up cron jobs that query RDAP directly. Our tool is rate-limited to prevent abuse.
Could be: (1) ccTLD doesn't support RDAP (some smaller country codes), (2) domain very new and not yet propagated, (3) RDAP server temporarily down. For unsupported ccTLDs, use the registry's own WHOIS web interface (e.g. nic.ru for .ru domains).
