PageSpeed is the Lighthouse audit that powers Google's Core Web Vitals ranking signal. This tool runs the official Google PageSpeed Insights API and returns the four category scores plus the metrics (LCP, FCP, CLS, TBT, TTI, Speed Index). Choose Mobile or Desktop strategy. Results cached 6 hours.
Google considers 90+ green, 50-89 needs improvement, below 50 poor. For Performance specifically, mobile 90+ is excellent; mobile 70+ is acceptable for most B2B sites. Marketing-heavy pages (heavy images, embeds, tracking scripts) routinely score 30-60 on mobile and still rank fine if Core Web Vitals individually pass.
Indirectly. Google uses Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP) as ranking signals. Lighthouse Performance score correlates with CWV but isn't directly used. Focus on the three CWV metrics passing thresholds rather than chasing 90+ Performance score.
Lighthouse runs in a lab environment with simulated throttling. Network latency, CPU contention on Google's servers, and time-of-day variation cause 5-15 point swings. Run 3 audits, take the median. Also: PSI lab data ≠ field data (CrUX). Field data is what Google actually uses for ranking.
Google's PageSpeed Insights API has a 25,000 requests/day quota. Caching for 6 hours protects the quota while keeping results fresh enough for development feedback. If you need a fresh audit immediately, run it manually on PageSpeed.web.dev.
